Ms. Lila Betty Skinner

It is with deep sorrow that the Skinner family announces the death of Ms. Lila Betty Skinner, 91. Ms. Skinner entered into rest on Sunday, June 7, 2026. The Directors of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home are caring for the family. A graveside funeral service to honor her life will be held at 1 o'clock on Thursday, June 11, 2026, in Piedmont Cemetery, with The Rev. Jed Bryant officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to First Baptist Church of Bishopville, 229 W. Church Street, Bishopville, SC 29010. Ms. Skinner was born on Thursday, September 6, 1934, in Bishopville, SC. She is the youngest child of the late Henry Lee "Jack" Skinner and the late Lila Bell Matuse Skinner. Betty was the last remaining family member. Betty was a graduate of Lander University and received her Master's Degree from George Mason University. She taught middle school for thirty-three years, primarily in Fairfax, Virginia, before retiring to Myrtle Beach in 1992. She enjoyed her retirement years playing golf with the Prestwick Country Club, cheering on the Clemson Tigers, and traveling the world with her best friend, Gerry Mull. She was fortunate to visit every state in the union as well as every continent. After Gerry's death in 2018, Betty returned home to Shannon Hill, in Bishopville, SC. She loved Bishopville and living in her family home place until her health would no longer allow her to live alone. Betty was active in many organizations throughout her life and teaching career. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, and the Huguenot Society. Betty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bishopville and the Kudsen Sunday School. Betty is survived by her nephews, Jack Skinner, Bill Skinner, Mitch Skinner, and Forrest Tindall. She is also survived by her nieces, Frances S. Bell, Jackie S. Reardon, Gloria S. Grant, Ruth S. Watkins, Lynn S. Campbell, Evie G. Robertson, Lisa G. Lamar, and Kay G. King. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard, John, Jack, Bill, and Bart Skinner, and her sisters, Adeline Brown, Jewell Tindall, and Vera Gandy.
