    Mrs. Ann Chewning Smith

    September 10, 1934 - March 31, 2022

Ann Chewning Smith, daughter of the late Joseph Warner Chewning and the late Martha Dell Barfield Chewning, 87, from Bishopville, SC, went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, March 31, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. A funeral service to honor her life will be held at 2 o'clock on Monday, April 4, 2022, in St. Andrew Church of God. The Rev. Lawrence Chewning and The Rev. Scott Hodge will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 PM on Sunday, April 3, 2022, at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. The Directors of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home are caring for the family. Born in Lee County, SC, she worked at Reeves Brothers and American National Can before marrying Erby Smith and moving to Greenville, SC. After marrying Erby, she worked as a Realtor. They bought properties in Greenville, SC, and Bishopville, SC, until retiring in Bishopville. A lifelong member of St. Andrew Church of God in Camden, SC, she was a devout Christian who loved God and her family. She received the Lee County Basketball Player of the year in 1951 and opened the Center for Mental Health during her stay in Greenville, SC, but you would never know these things until you asked her because of her humble nature. She also founded the Erby Smith scholarship for students of MACU. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Wayne Brown, daughter Sherri Brown; stepdaughters, Sherry Smith, Sandra (Sam) Jones, Rose Marie (Chuck) Soldano; two granddaughters, Mollie (Austin) Kocher, Megan Lee; two grandsons, Trent (Raeanne) Brown, Stephen Hayes "Trey" (Breana) Lee III; two great-grandchildren, Harper Kate Lee and William Kocher; sisters, Jean (Hayne) Keziah, and Judy (JR) Logan; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Erby Smith; brother, Joe Chewning; sister, Becky Corbett. Serving as pallbearers will be Ricky Chewning, Allen Chewning, Scott Chewning, Johnnie Logan, Warner Logan, Hugh Logan, and Stephen Corbett. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the caregivers that took such great care of Ann: Springdale Healthcare Center, Gerri Houck, Michelle Cousar, and Tracey Thomas.
