    Mrs. Betty Jane Witherspoon Melberg

    May 25, 1938 - January 18, 2022

    It is with deep sorrow that Mr. Glenn Martin Melberg, Lt. Col, USAF (Ret.), announces the death of his beloved wife, Betty Jane Witherspoon Melberg, 83. Mrs. Melberg passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning January 18, 2022, in Bishopville, SC. She was born May 25, 1938, in Atlanta, GA, the daughter of Frederick James Witherspoon and Mary Frances Sharkey. Betty graduated from Brown High School in the Class of 1956. She attended Truett-McConnell College before getting married to Roger Lee Brannon, a former recruit in the United States Marine Corps. During this marriage, Betty was heavily involved in the decorative flower growing industry and managed five large greenhouses. Her first marriage ended in 1989 whereupon she resettled in Sumter, SC. For several years she performed as a college and career advisor to high school students, assisting many young people in choosing appropriate schools and procuring available financing. In 2001, she married Glenn Martin Melberg, Lt. Col., USAF (Ret), and was a loyal supporter of him and of his teaching career at Camden Military Academy. in addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Willard. She is survived by her loving husband, Glenn Martin Melberg, Lt. Col, USAF (Ret.) of Bishopville, SC; daughters, Cindy (Tony) Byram, Denise Forward of Cherokee City, GA; son, Jon (Angel) Brannon of Bishopville, SC; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be announced in due course.
