It is with deep sorrow that the McDowell family announces the death of their beloved father, Edward Davis “Mickey” McDowell, Sr., 90. Mr. McDowell passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Clemson, SC. The Directors of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home in Bishopville are caring for the family, where they will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 p.m.on Saturday, April 9, 2022. A private graveside service for the family and close friends will be held at St. Luke United Methodist Church Cemetery following the visitation, with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour officiating. Mr. McDowell, the widower of Gloria Anne McDowell, was born in Lee County, SC, on August 7, 1931. He was the son of the late Gwaltney Morris McDowell and the late Elizabeth Clowney Stone McDowell. He graduated from Bishopville High School in 1949 and The Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina in 1954 with a major in Agriculture-Animal Husbandry. After college, Mickey married the love of his life, Anne Merck. Mickey served in the Army Infantry Division until he was honorably discharged. He and Anne settled on the family farm, Merry Oaks Farm, in Elliott, SC, to raise their family. He grew a versatile array of row crops and produced a significant swine herd. His farm sold breeder stock across the southeast. After retiring from farming, Mickey enjoyed teaching and coaching at Lee Academy, where he was a beloved teacher and coach. Mickey loved all things Clemson and all things family! He enjoyed going to Clemson football, basketball, and baseball games with regularity, tailgating with family and friends, and pulling for the Tigers. Mickey was made an honorary member of the Clemson Block and Bridle in 1977. Mickey was an active member of the St. Luke Methodist Church in Elliott, SC, and attended Clemson First Baptist Church in Clemson, SC, after moving to the Clemson area. He is survived by his loving daughters, Vicki M. (Brantley) Carter of Timmonsville, Cindy M. (Barry) Bishop of Greenville, and Lisa M. (Tad) Lanning of Rock Hill; son Davy (Caroline) McDowell of Clemson; nine grandchildren, Forrest (Daina) Carter, Casey C. (Coley) Moore, Matt (Brittney) Bolt, Kelleigh B. (Rusty) Hamrick, Spencer (Brittany) Lanning, Alison L. (Jarred) Enos, Emily M. (Mason) Child, Catherine M. (Clay) Terrell, and Anna M. (Robert) Irby; and 15 great-grandchildren.
