Lila Fannie White Watson went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 11, 2021. She was 89. A funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock on Thursday, April 15, 2021, in Cedar Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby James will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM on Wednesday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cedar Creek Baptist Church, 2980 Camden Highway, Bishopville, SC 29010. Mrs. Watson, the widow of Thompson J. Watson, was born in Lee County, SC. She was a daughter of the late Marion Napier White and Lila Lee Davis White. She graduated from Ashwood High School and then graduated from Coker College in 1952 with her business degree. While at Coker, she lettered in Field Hockey and was very active in college life. She worked a total of 45 years for the State of South Carolina. She taught at Midway and Bishopville High Schools. She worked for 40 years for the Lee County Department of Social Services, spending the last 23 years as a County Director. In 1966, Lee County was one of the first counties to begin the Food Stamp Program, which fell under DSS. She loved Lee County and the people and enjoyed helping anyone with a need. She never met a stranger and loved interacting with people. She received numerous awards for community service. She was a Charter Member of the Lee County Chapter of The South Carolina Employees Association and served as President for several years. She also served many years with the Lee County Disaster Preparedness Agency, helping with issues that affected Lee County, such as Hurricane Hugo. She always loved history and was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She spent many hours doing genealogy research on her family. During retirement, she took up painting and enjoyed so much painting pictures for family members. She was very social and enjoyed all types of activities and, in general, was always ready to go “Anywhere.” Her greatest love was family. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and was grateful to get to know her great-granddaughter. She loved telling them about her childhood and family history. She made a number of trips to Florida over the years so she could be close to grandchildren and was able to be a big part of her local grandchildren’s lives. She was loved and will be missed by many. She is survived by her sons, Tom “Bubba” (Cindy) Watson of Ocala, FL, Mark Watson of Bishopville, SC; daughter, Lila (Benny) Shirley of Camden, SC; grandchildren, T. J. Watson, III of Ocala, FL, Lauren Fredricks of Ocala, FL, Victoria Watson of Ocala, FL, Jesse Watson of Gilbert, SC, Aubrey Watson of Gilbert, SC; great-granddaughter, Ella Rose Watson of Ocala, FL. She was preceded in death by her brother, D. A. White; sister, Marion White Messier. Serving as pallbearers will be T. J. Watson, Jesse Watson, Anthony Messier, Will Watson, John Watson, and Tim Watson.
