Funeral services for Mr. James Garland “Smitty” Smith, 94, who passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at McCoy Nursing Center, Bishopville, SC, will be held at 11 o'clock on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Watson assisted by The Rev. Larry Dobson will officiate with burial to follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Friday, March 17, 2017, at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home, 200 West Church Street, Bishopville, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Born in Chesterfield, S.C, he was the son of the late James Kirby and Ella Maude Freeman Smith. He attended Zoar School and Friendship Methodist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army 82 Airborne during WWII. After 34 years of service as a lineman for Carolina Power and Light Company, he retired to enjoy hunting, fishing, traveling with his family and helping out his community and friends whenever and wherever he could. He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Williamson Smith and survived by their children, Brenda Raley (Aaron) Bishopville, SC, Sandy Holloman, Dalzell, SC and Randy Smith (Sherry) Sumter, SC. He was “Pa” to 5 grandchildren by birth, Scotty Holloman Scurry (Trey), Dalzell, SC, Aaron Kyle Raley (Stephanie), Crystal Lake, Illinois, Ashley Randal Smith (Cristy), Lexington, SC and Brandon Allen Smith, Bishopville, SC and countless others by love, Corbin Michael Bruce of Sumter, SC and the children of Robert E. Lee Academy Daycare and Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he attended for more than 50 years. He has three great-grandchildren, Landon HazeLeigh Scurry, Colton Levi and Keller Joseph Raley. He is also survived by one sister, Sylvia Neal (Gene) Hurst of Chesterfield, SC and preceded by four brothers, Robert L. “Rex,” Jack, Bill and Glenn and two sisters, Lois Parks and Carolyn Coley.
