March 24, 1928 - May 20, 2020
Margaret Lyles "Johnie" Medlin, age 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. She was born March 24, 1928, the daughter of James H. Lyles and Mamie Hudson Lyles. Johnie worked for a short time at Tic Tac in Camden, but most of her life was spent as a "homemaker", an occupation she cherished. Her family always had meals on the table, clean clothes to wear and bandaids and merthiolate for those medical emergencies. She was an excellent pitcher and quarterback having honed her skills playing with her sons and their friends and later with her grandsons and their friends. She always said she had no patience, but she loved to fish. She would stand on a riverbank or sit in a boat all day watching her cork, waiting on a "bite". She was an expert at cleaning fish, loved the way they smelled as she was frying them, but never ate them. She didn't eat anything that "came out of the water". She lost her husband in 1980 to a heart attack after being married for almost 32 years. She went on with her life in the house they had built on "the circle" in Cedar Creek. She took comfort in her family, especially her grandsons, or her "boys" as she called them. She was "Nanny" to them and their friends and they spent many hours fishing, playing ball, "exploring" in the woods and as they got older, riding four-wheelers and motorcycles. She loved her Savior, her family, her church (Cedar Creek Baptist) and the people of the Cedar Creek community. She also loved eating Sunday dinners at her sister Evelyn's house and spending the afternoon with the family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Lucious Saverance, Bill Lyles, and Bud Saverance; her sister, Mae Stowe; and her grandson, Justin Medlin. She had fond memories and talked of them often. She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Arledge; her sons, Zack Anthony (Dianne) Medlin and David Mitchell (Mary) Medlin; three grandsons, David "Lee" (Audra) Medlin, Mat Medlin and Shane Medlin; three great-granddaughters, Mia, Harper and Harlow Medlin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank the staff of McCoy Memorial Nursing Center for the care and love they gave her for a little over four years. Thanks also to Miss Dorothy, her roommate, and the other residents for being such good friends. A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Creek Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Bobby James and Rev. Stephen Sanderson. Plans are to have a "gathering" to celebrate her life at a later date. Memorials may be made to Cedar Creek Baptist Church, 715 Gum Springs Road, Bishopville, SC 29010. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Directors are caring for the family.
