Mary Oeland Alexander went to be with her Lord on June 13, 2020, with her family by her side. A private service will be held at Hancock Elmore Funeral Home. The Reverend Fred McDaniel, The Reverend Helen Coker Ham, and The Reverend Fran Connell will officiate. Mrs. Alexander was the daughter of the late James Moore and Martha Oeland. She was born in Spartanburg, SC, and graduated from St. John’s High School in Darlington and Converse College in Spartanburg. She moved to Bishopville after marrying Tommy Alexander and they created a loving home for their family for over fifty years. Mary was a selfless giver and loved everyone. As a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, she was a Sunday school teacher (Young Adult class named in her honor), served as chairperson of the Administrative Board, and the Council of Ministries; delegate to the Annual Conference; president of the Women of the Church; and member of the Pastor-Parish Relationship Committee. While living in Bishopville Mary was a member of the Christian Unity committee for social peace, the Committee for Progress and Understanding, Junior Welfare League, March of Dimes, and the Lee County Arts Council. She received the Converse 100 Award in 2006 for her selfless giving to her community. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends and sharing the love of Jesus Christ. She leaves behind her children Edward Moore Alexander Florence, SC, Martha Alexander Houser (Ronnie) Florence, SC, Mary Kay Alexander Kaufman (Tim) Mobile, AL. She also leaves behind four loving grandchildren Kaylen Houser Dodson (Brandon), Caroline Alexander, Will Kaufman, and Martha Kaufman and two great-grandchildren Mason Dodson and Eliza Dodson. She also leaves behind three very special sisters Martha Hart (Carroll), Helen Coker, and Nora Rushton (Randy). Her life was also blessed with many nieces and nephews she adored. She was predeceased in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Thomas H. Alexander; son, Thomas H. Alexander Jr. (Bert); daughter-in-law, Donna Redding Alexander; brother-in-law, Morgan Coker.
