Mr. Karl Huggins Smith

It is with deep sorrow that the Smith family announces the death of Mr. Karl Huggins Smith, 70. Mr. Smith entered into rest on Sunday, February 18, 2024. The Directors of Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home & Crematory are caring for the family. A funeral service to honor his life will be held at 3 o'clock on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Kelleytown Baptist Church in Hartsville, SC, with The Rev. Rod Elliott officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 4:00 until 6:00 pm on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. A private family burial will follow. Memorials may be made in his honor to the Garnet Trust Foundation, 1612 Marion Street, Suite 220, Columbia, SC 29201, or First Church of God of the Reformation, 1823 Kelleytown Road, Hartsville, SC 29550. Born in Bishopville, SC, Karl was the son of the late T. Bruce Smith and Mary Huggins Smith. Along with his four siblings, he was raised in the grocery store and family furniture business, BoSmith. Karl was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. Karl has practiced law in Hartsville for over forty-four years. He was a family man who loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, enjoyed a round of golf with his buddies, and loved the South Carolina Gamecocks. You could often find him enjoying breakfast with his siblings and, more recently, enjoying antiquing with his wife and son. Karl is survived by his wife, Jo Ann (Sisty) Smith of Hartsville, SC; daughters, Jo (Scott) Nelson and Courtney (Mike) Geiger of Hartsville, SC; son, Zach Smith of Hartsville, SC; stepdaughters, Heather (Zeke) Ridgeway of Colfax, NC and Lori (Chase) Curtin of Austin, TX; and grandchildren, Leila Nelson, Eli Geiger, Peyton Ridgeway, Carson Ridgeway, Liam Curtin, and Jameson Curtin. Karl is also survived by his sisters, Lynn (Howard) Gainey and Sara Odom of Hartsville, SC, and Argent Jacob of Spartanburg, SC; sister-in-law, Dorothy Tedder Smith of Bishopville, SC; and various nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. Karl is preceded in death by his son, Karl Miller Smith; parents, T. Bruce and Mary Smith; brother, T. Bruce Smith; and his brothers-in-law, Phillip Odom, and Dillard Jacobs.
